Waqt
: The Race Against Time
Director : Vipul
Amrutlal Shah
Cast : Amitabh
Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Shefali Shah and Priyanka Chopra.
Waqt is unshamedly cheesy and surprisingly moving. It is the
melodrama of the 1980s- L.V. Prasad
cinema
meets Karan Johar by way of Ekta
Kapoor. Which means that characters wear dazzling clothes,
no matter what the occasion and hour; their homes are large
and over-furnished; and everybody, men included, sheds copious
tears.
But Vipul Amrutlal Shah and his
writer Aatish Kapadia are not afraid of bringing out the violins
and yanking at heart-strings. So the film has genuinely touching
scenes and some easy laughs provided by Boman
Irani and Rajpal Yadav. The camaraderie between

Amitabh
Bachchan,
as the dying patriarch, and Akshay Kumar,
as the spoilt son, holds Waqt together. But the loopholes in
the script are large enough for a car to drive through- for
one, how does the son’s equally spoilt wife, who is used
to living in a bedroom with a heated swimming pool, adjust
so
smilingly to life in an outhouse?
