The Darling : Russell Banks.
Hannah Musgrave is the daughter
of a privileged family in Boston and a radical member of a terrorist
group, the Weather Underground (for which she leaves behind an
education at Harvard University and her family.) Until one day
she has to escape from America to Liberia.
There she marries Woodrow Sundita -a government minister - and
has his children, only to spend her time looking after abandoned
chimpanzees, “the dreamers”
that have a special place in her heart. Just when everything seems
fine, Hannah’s life is interrupted
once again by a revolution in Liberia
and she has to leave for America.
it’s only a couple of years later that Hannah
comes back to find what’s left of her family and beloved
“dreamers”.
Brief : Essentially
a story about a woman, her multiple identities and her struggle
to find a place in a world dominated by violence, colonialism
and revolution.
